2009 Championship Bulletin

Round 6

October to December, 2009

Welcome to the 2009 Queens Chess Club Championship !!

Our tournament will end on Friday December 4, 2009. Byes for Rounds 6, 7 and or 8 can no longer be requested.

The time control is game in 2 hours (120 minutes). If you are using an analog clock (the old fashioned clock), please set it for 4:00 for the time to run out at 6:00. If you are using a delay clock, set the delay for five minutes and the time to count down from 1 hour 55 minutes or 115 minutes, depending on which kind of clock you have. A delay clock is preferred. Please arrange yourselves so that the clock faces the center aisle, not the wall!!

We will try to post pairings by Tuesday on the club’s website, www.queens-chess.com.

We are using duplicate score sheets so that we can provide weekly bulletins on the website and in paper copy on the following Friday. Please submit a copy to Brian Lawson – in some cases we need both versions to figure out the moves, so each player should submit a copy, preferably simultaneously.

This tournament is also being FIDE-rated for the first time. If you do not yet have a FIDE rating, a good result against players who have them may get you started on getting a FIDE rating of your own. If you have played against FIDE-rated players before, you may have a FIDE ID# already, even if your results have not yet led to a published FIDE rating (a rating of 1900 or higher is required to be official, I think). FIDE ratings are published four times per year and this tournament will be included in the January 2010 ratings.

We apologize for the lack of a separate room for analysis. When your game is over, please mark your result on the pairing sheet, turn in your copies of the score sheet and do not analyze or talk while there are still games going on. You are permitted to quietly watch the other games. If you have a friend or relative still playing, please stand behind that player, not facing him or her.

Guaranteed prizes to the top three finishers are $500-$300-$200 to the top three, $150-$100 to the top 2 under 2000, $140-$95 to the top 2 under 1800 and $130-$85 to the top 2 under 1600, for a total of $1700. If, for example, a player with a rating in the 1700s scores more points than anyone in the 1800s or 1900s, that player would qualify for the higher U2000 prize. In 1999 one of our co-champions managed to do just that, sweeping the four games he did play.

Good luck and good chess !!
