Bonin and Kopec Inaugurate New Location

by on October 24, 2008
On Friday, 10/24/2008, the Queens Chess Club took up residency at a new location, the All Saints Lutheran Church; 164-02 Goethals Avenue; Jamaica, NY 11432.

Our first event at the Church (after our annual Business / Membership Meeting) was a four- round Swiss, Game 15 Quick tournament.  Surprisingly, the event drew twenty players, and it was jointly won by International Masters Danny Kopec (2481) and Jay Bonin (2366).  Each of the winners took home $75, splitting the combined $90 first prize and $60 second prize.  Danny and Jay each finished with 3.5 points, quickly drawing their game in the final round. It was clear to me that both gentlemen strongly support our Club. and so I would like to publicly thank them for that, in this forum.

There were four prizes given out to the 20 players present, and so the last two prizes were $45 to top Under 1700 and $35 to top Under 1400.  Sundar Swaminathan (with a 1645 Quick rating for October) scored three points out of four, losing only Larry Tamarkin (2040) in the second Round. Michael Phillip (1271) possibly had the most remarkable result of the tournament, considering the fact that he, too, finished with three points out of four.  Michael defeated Mitchell Drobbin (with a 1785 Quick rating) in Round Four, which was crucial in his success in this event.

Messrs. Swaminathan and Phillip each won $40; this is because the USCF Rules on prize distribution state that Class (or category) prizes must be combined, when the two players involved finish with identical scores.  So in this case, the U1700 and U1400 prizes were combined, and then split.

The new location has very limited facilities for casual or “skittles” players.  Inasmuch as we are now charged by the Parish Council with maintaining tight security over the front door to the Chuch, we will be using the landing inside the front door as the skittles and post-mortem analysis area.  That provides space for perhaps six to eight players, only; the playing area for tournament games is down a flight of stairs from the landing, in the Church basement.

Also, all players will now be required to provide proof of Queens CC Membership upon entering the Club, unless they are visitors only (and do not intend to appear on a regular basis).  This is necessary now, because we have signed a lease through September 2009; the lease requires a fixed rent of $250 per month.

Please consult the website for our new schedule, which is somewhat tentative (as the Church will advise us as to a few dates in 2009, which will be unavailable to the Club).

The Membership Meeting saw the resoration of the Officer structure which we had about two or three years ago:  President — Ed Frumkin; Vice President / Treasurer — Joe Felber;  Secretary — Jay Kleinman;  and Webmaster — Brian Lawson.

Chief TD Ed Frumkin and Joe Felber directed the Quick tournament for the Queens Chess Club.
