Bonin Captures 2008 Queens CC Summer Open

by on August 1, 2008

With six of the Club’s Experts and Class A players “away,” battling in the concurrent FIDE- rated Futurity, IM Jay Bonin (2361) won the Summer Open, with a perfect 4-0 score.  He took home the $120 first place prize for his efforts.

The four-round Swiss event was held from 07/11/2008 through 08/01/2008 (inclusive).

A notable performance was turned in by Zoltan Sugar (1693), a long-time Member of the Queens Chess Club. Zoltan’s toughest fight was perhaps his last-round victory over Al Casanova (1755), who was initially ranked sixth out of the 20 players in the event.  For his score of 3.5 points out of four, Sugar was the clear winner of the $70 second place prize.

Continuing his recent return to tournament play after an extended absence of several years, David Randall (1552) had an outstanding 3.0 score, losing only to the tournament winner.  He defeated several of the top-ranked players in the event (the tough pairings not fazing him, apparently!), and so he ended up with a performance rating of about 2136.

Also scoring three points was Rich Ziet (1697), who wrapped up his event with a tricky tactical victory over Ken Cruz (1777).  Randall and Ziet split the Under 1700 prize of $60.

Finally, the Under 1500 prize of $50 was won by Guy Rawlins (1482) who, like Messrs. Randall and Ziet tallied a final score of three points out of a possible four.

The time control for the 4-SS event was the customary 30/75, followed by SD/ 60.

In normal fashion for The Queens CC, the event was jointly directed by Chief TD Ed Frumkin and Joe Felber.
