Moore Battles to Victory in 2008 Queens June Open

by on June 27, 2008

Club newcomer Dennis Moore (1904 on the USCF June 2008 rating list) played in a determined and impressive fashion, as he completed a 4-0 sweep in the June Open, to take sole possession of the $130 first place prize. A former Expert himself, Dennis defeated Club President Joe Felber (2052), Webmaster Brian Lawson (2000),  and second-ranked Robert Guevara (2055), enroute to his tournament victory.

The 4-SS, 30/75, G/60 event attracted 28 players, and was held at the Queens Chess Club from 06/06/2008- 06/27/2008 (inclusive).

Returning to the Club after a short hiatus, International Master Jay Bonin (2376) took the $70 second place prize, with a score of 3.5 points out of four.  The only blemish on his effort was a draw against Neal Bellon (1643), who continues to impress by his occasional “nicks” against much higher-rated competition.

Instead of offering conventional Class prizes (in specific rating categories), it was decided to offer “Under” prizes, meaning that a prize would simply be awarded to a top-scoring player under a certain rating.  In this event, the $65 Under 2000 prize was won by Andrew Ryba (1906), with an undefeated three points out of four.  Young Andrew shook off a Round One draw vs. Guy Rawlins (1414) and then took a half-point bye in Round Two.  He then defeated Bellon and Steve Chernick (1559) in the last two rounds, to earn his prize.

The Under 1800 prize of $55 was won by Kenneth Cruz (1781), who lost only to Bonin, and  scored 2.5 points out of four. Ken was able to easily hold a Pawn- down Bishops of opposites ending in the last Round vs. Richard Ziet (1712), which was highly instrumental in helping him to garner his prize.

The Under 1600 prize of $45 was split evenly among Hyunseung Yang (1590), Chernick (1559) and Frank Drazil (1544).  Each of these three players had an even score in the four-round event, which featured a $20 entry fee.

Finally, the $35 Under 1400 prize was won by Philip Mathew (1397), who continues to do quite well at the Club in that rating “category.”  Philip’s two-point even score was greatly assisted by a forfeit win in the final round.  We can only again ask all players to promptly notify either President/ Teasurer Joe Felber, or Chief TD Ed Frumkin, when they are unable to appear for a scheduled tournament round.

Ed Frumkin recently prepared a revised tournament schedule through 11/21/2008 — the last Round of the 2008 QCC Club Championship.  The new schedule may be found on this website shortly, and printed copies will be made available at the Club, on a weekly basis.

Please note that most Queens Chess Club events are NOT advertised in CHESS LIFE (in order to save the TLA fees), so it is important to pick up this flyer on a periodic basis.

As usual, the 2008 Queens CC June Open was directed by Ed Frumkin and Joe Felber, for the Club.
