Lima and Frawley Win 2007 Queens July Open

by on July 27, 2007
It’s not often that two players rated in the 1600’s and 1700’s emerge victorious in a “slow Swiss” at the Queens Chess Club.  But due to the convergence of circumstances and a little luck, that’s precisely what occurred in this year’s July Open.  The annual event was held from 07/06/2007 through 07/27/2007 (inclusive), at the Club’s usual playing site in Jamaica, Queens.

The 4-SS, 30/75 event drew 23 players, with IM Jay Bonin absent for once, and most of the Experts “away,” participating in the Club’s concurrent FIDE Futurity.

Things took quite an unexpected turn in Round 2, when top-ranked Club President / Treasurer Joe Felber (2000) lost to Kenneth Cruz (1714).  And, as if that were not surprising enough, Paul Denig (1646) also upset second- ranked Arunas Simonaitis (1984), in the very same round!  Now that the “door was open just a little,” Louis Lima (1757) and James Frawley (1646) barged through, and even broke it down!

When the “smoke had cleared” after four rounds, Louis and Jim had each scored 3.5 out of four points.  Thus, they split the combined first and U1650 prizes, totaling $175, and hence won $87.50 each.  Felber won his other three games, to finish with three points — as did Mulazim (“Doc”) Muwwakkil (1754); so these two Club regulars split $105, the combined total of the $70 second prize and $35 third prize.

The $75 Under 1600 prize was won by long-time Club stalwart Henry Milerski (1400), who through no fault of his own, did score one of his two points via a forfeit win.

Again, I must emphasize that it is most unsportsmanlike to forfeit a tournament game without notice.  It will often “skew” or distort the final prize distribution, and it also wrecks (or at least warps!) the competitive integrity of a tournament.   Such thoughtless behavior is not only unfair to the player who is waiting and expecting a game, but it is also unfair to all others in the event.

As Club President, I will support and enforce a policy of fining those who are not responsible enough to notify a TD when they cannot play!
