IM Jay Bonin Narrowly Victorious in 12th Junior/Senior Championship

by on June 29, 2007

International Master Jay Bonin (2374), having recently returned from his participation in the 2007 US Closed Championship in Stillwater, OK, won the 2007 (12th) Queens CC Junior/ Senior Championship.  Jay’s score of 3.5 out of four was sufficient to win the $100 first prize.

The event was held from 06/08/2007 through 06/29/2007 (inclusive) at the Club’s playing site, which is located at the Margaret Tietz Nursing Center in Jamaica, NY.

The  four round Swiss system event drew 20 players, and featured the usual  QCC 30/75 and SD/60 time control.  But it was somewhat unique in that the “Class” prizes were awarded in relation to a player’s age.  That is, the six oldest players were in the Senior section, then those of middle age (or a bit older!) were placed into the “Boomer” section, and then the youngest group was naturally the “Junior” section.

When all “chess hostilities” had finally ceased, the other prize winners were as follows:  Ed Frumkin (2038), Joe Felber (2024), Andrew Ryba (1897) and Zoltan Sugar (1730) all finished with three points out of four.

USCF prize allocation rules dictated that they evenly split the $50 second prize, combined with the $40 Boomer prize and the $40 Junior prize.  This meant that $130 was split four ways, each player thus winning $32.50.

Finally, Bill Arluck won the $40 Senior prize, with two points out of four.

Vice President and Chief TD Ed Frumkin did his usual exemplary job in directing the event for the Queens Chess Club.
