Bonin Wins 2007 Queens Chess Club Winter Open

  Over Half the Field Cashes at the Queens Winter OpenYes, IM Jay Bonin (2420) won the tournament, as usual, winning his first four games from Jim Frawley (1632), Brian Blake (1854), Ed Frumkin (2022) and Dick Murphy (1976) before drawing quickly with Tony Lorenzo (1811) to take the $200 top prize. Tony was clear second at 4-1, defeating Zoltan Sugar (1759), Kenneth Cruz (1700) and Tom Murphy (1759) after a Round 1 bye to take home $100. Joe Felber (2000), Dick Murphy, Mitch Drobbin (1933, loss to Dick Murphy in Round 3) and Jay Kleinman (1930, loss to Brad Rice (1445) in Round 1) scored 3½-1½, as did Andrew Ryba (1785). Andrew won the top 1700-1899 prize of $100, while the other four won $15 each, dividing the $60 3rd prize. Blake, Tom Murphy, Louis Lima (1730), Ken Schemitz (1726) and Ken Cruz all scored 3-2 to take home $12 each, dividing the $60 prize for 2nd 1700-1899, as did Paul Denig (1636), who took the top 1500-1699 prize of $90. Neal Bellon (1661)’s 2½-2½ was good for the 2nd 1500-1699 prize of $50, while Hyunseung Yang (1413) and Robert Chen (1262) won $75 each, splitting the $100 and $50 prizes for under 1500. Qualifying upsets were notched by Lorenzo for the draw with Bonin, Rice for the win from Kleinman and a draw in Round 2 against Dick Murphy, Yang for his Round 3 win from Schemitz, John Fusto (1178) for his Round 4 win from Frank Drazil (1585) and Santa Calderon (858) for her Round 2 win from Henry Milerski (1410). Calderon now leads the 2006-2007 race for single game upset (552 points) and Rice leads the cumulative total with 750½ points. The upset contest starts with the Queens Chess Club Championship in October and runs through the end of the following September. The tournament was held from January 5-February 2, 2007 and was directed by Ed Frumkin and Joe Felber. There were 30 entrants and one house player.

The third place and second 1700-1899 were divided so many ways that 16 players out of 30 won something:
