Rybas and Drobbin Romp at 63rd Speedy Open

by on April 7, 2006

The old saying “Youth shall be served” was strongly affirmed at the 63rd Speedy Open, a 4-SS. Game 15 event held on 04/07/2006.

Andrew Ryba, with a February Quick rating of 1609, scored 3.5 out of 4, drawing only his brother in a forced pairing in the final round.  On his “victory march,” he defeated second-seed Brian Lawson (1876) and third- ranked Mitch Drobbin (1755).  As a result, he won the $35 first prize.

Nicholas Ryba (1656) started well with a “come-from-behind” draw vs. top seed Joe Felber (1894), and then defeated Ken Cruz (1672) and Club Webmaster Brian Lawson, on the way to taking the $20 U1700 prize.

Mitch Drobbin took the $20 second-place prize with three points out of four, in the ten-player event.

The Club was also pleased to welcome newcomer Clare Broomfield, who had only played in her first tournament at the Marshall CC in mid-March of 2006.

As Club members should know, I am a stickler for starting events pretty much on time.  I closed the entries at 8:15PM, and heard a little grumbling afterwards.  Let it now be known on this site that I would like all future events (barring extremely bad weather) to close entries promptly at 8:15PM.

(Report by Club President Joe Felber)  (end of report)
